| 説明 | Mary Bateman accepted the Town & Country sponsorship award. Our final inductee is being honored for Outstanding Sponsorship. Al Barnes and Ken Enright opened Town & Country Lanes just in time for the 1958-59 bowling season. At this time, Town & Country only had twenty-four lanes. In 1960, twenty-four more lanes were added making a total of forty-eight lanes. Barnes and Enright operated Town & Country until 1975, when the manager, Buddy Bateman, purchased the bowling center. Buddy, a Hall of Famer himself, owner and operated Town & Country with the help of sons Greg & Doug, and his daughter-in-law Karla until he sold it to Frank Miroballi in April 2004. Miroballi was the proprietor until December 2010 when tragedy occurred; fire burnt and destroyed the bowling center that so many called home. For the 52 years that Town & Country Lanes was in existence, the name could be found on the shirts of several bowling teams in multiple leagues each season. Ironically, a team named in honor of Town & Country won the final Rock Island Milan USBC Bowling Association Tournament in 2013. However, sponsorship was not limited to bowling teams, as the Town & Country name could be found on Rock Island Little League baseball jerseys, and many other sports. Town & Country was also the home lanes for the Rock Island High school bowling team for many years.Several leagues called Town & Country home. The Rock Island Classic League (later named the Bill Searcy Classic League) and the Rock Island City League were two of the original leagues of hte Rock Island Bowling Association. They both bowled each week at Town & Country at one time. The Rock Island Ladies League, one of the oldest women's leagues in the country, bowled at Town & Country from its opening in 1958 until the bowling center burned down in 2010.In addition to leagues, Town & Country also hosted countless tournaments over the years, In total, fourteen Rock Island-Milan Bowling Association Tournaments were held at Town & Country. They also hosted several Rock Island-Milan-Moline USBC Women's Bowling Association Tournaments. Multiple Illinois State Bowling Association Tournaments were held at Town & Country as well as state senior tournaments and the state Moose tournament. None of these tournaments were as big as the WIBC tournament that Town & Country hosted in 1998, in which it held the singles and doubles competition. It was during this tournament that nearly 44,000 women visited the Quad City area with an influx of more than $50 million into the local economy. The late great Buddy Bateman was instrumental in bringing the tournament to Town & Country.Several local hall of famers either called Town & Country home for years or were employed by the center for many years. Jay Eng, Wanda Johnson, Judy Salazar, Ed McCombs, Bill Searcy, Neal Mazzarollo, Rick Thiem, and all of the Bateman Family are just a few of the hall of famers that spent countless years working at the Rock Island establishment.Unfortunately, things happened that altered everything we knew and the loss of Town & Country was one of them. The Quad City Bowling Community will never be the same. Bowling centers have come and gone through the years, but none as prominent as Town & Country, Some of us, 5 years later after the horrible fire, still call Town & Country home; some of us always will.Mary Bateman accepted the sponsorship award for Town & Country. Welcoming Town & Country into the 2015 GRICO Hall of Fame. |
