| 説明 | Roman respect for Greek culture and myth can be traced to the many Greek cities of Magna Graecia, located on the southern Italian coast and according to Cicero, Syracuse was “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all”. It defeated the mighty Athens in 413 BC and remained the capital of the island of Sicily after the Romans defeated and killed inimitable Archimedes [287 BC – c. 212 BC] It remained the center of Sicily / Byzantine resistance to the gradual Muslim conquest of Sicily in 878 AD Syracuse is a pleasant town easily seen. The historic area of the city is separate from the modern town and is found on the island of Ortigia.
