説明Closed since 2003 this Lee Point Radar Base was being stripped of asbestos prior to demolition when it was gutted by fire in August 2014. This radar base was built in 1959-61 by No 5 Airfield Construction Squadron (5 ACS) , and was the home of No 2 Control and Reporting Unit, which was an RAAF Air Defence Radar Unit. It was the hub of Air Defence in Northern Australia from 1961 until 2003, when the unit was closed and moved to RAAF Tindal. The site had its own power supply. It was a purpose built building with four different levels inside the operations room of the main building. All aircraft flight plans were processed in the ops room, where new aircraft which had been picked up, were identified. There was a two story Plotting Board, which dominated the Operations Room. All information and data that was applicable to the Air Defence Controllers, was written on the back of the Plotting Board By Aircraft Plotters, who were all highly trained radar operators and very skilled at writing "backwards".The first WRAAF Aircraft Plotters since WW2 were posted to this unit early in 1961. On the top floor at the rear of the Ops Room were the Control Section and Battle Centre. There was also a large room that was used for Civil Defence. The Air raid sirens that were placed around Darwin were operated from this room and were tested every month. The various Crew Rooms were also on this level. This unit later became a part Training Unit and the lecture Rooms were also on this level. There was a Plant Room in the operations building containing very large Air Conditioning Units. The whole building had to be air conditioned because of heat from the massive amount of electrical equipment. The unit had its own Transport Section where Electrical Fitters and Motor Transport Fitters maintained all vehicles and generators . There was a guard room, and security dog kennel at the main gate and next to this was a Communal kitchen for the airmen, sergeants and officers messes. This building also contained showers and toilets and a small canteen.Although built during the Cold War to detect any surprise attack against Darwin and its RAAF base it was only made 24hour operational in 1963-4 when The Indonesian Confrontation was taking place in Malaya. At that time next to the Unit was a Surface to Air Missile Battery (30 Squadron Detachment) which had eight Bloodhound Missiles on rotating, radar controlled bases and its own acquisition radar.
