| 説明 | Walking along the Newcastle quayside this striking "Blacksmiths Needle" artwork strikes a pose. Its a puzzling thing and it took a bit of googling home to discover it was commissioned by the Members of the British Association of Blacksmith Artists, its describes as: -"The Needle is conical in form with six sections. Each section contains objects, which relate to one of the senses including the sixth. The objects were made in public “forge-ins” with a mainly maritime theme. The work was inaugurated in May 1997 by Evelyn Glennie, the percussionist ringing a bell which hangs inside the needle".Hard to see the inscription on the plate facing left in pic, at the bottom of the sculpture, it reads:""Gleams through the trees the red light of the forge" and the simple attribution - "Longfellow." (I wonder why an American poet was selected for the sculpture)? The quotation comes from one of his plays: THE SPANISH STUDENTPrecoisa: "How strangely gleams through the gigantic treesThe red light of the forge,Wild beckoning shadows, Stalk through the forest, ever and anon.Rising and bending with the flickering flameThen flitting into darkness"William Wadsworth Longfellow 1807 - 1882. |
