| 説明 | Theresa ThomI am an aquatic ecologist with our Region’s Inventory and Monitoring Branch, stationed at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge in Hardeeville, South Carolina. The majority of my time is spent supporting the Southeast Region with credible, scientific data related to water resources. It is my goal to integrate scientific excellence into water management. Water and the activities associated with it are my passion. Growing up in Minnesota nurtured my life-long love of fishing, swimming, and exploring. My sense of exploration (and my twin sister) brought me to Atlanta, Georgia where I attended Emory University and completed my undergraduate degree in Biology. While at Emory, I had the opportunity to travel to Peru and assist with tropical ecology research at the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research. Swimming in the Rio Napo and experiencing the Amazon River dramatically changed my life. I explored both South and Central America and conducted research in Ecuador, which led to a M.S. in Conservation Ecology through the Institute of Ecology at the University of Georgia. Eventually, I relocated to Florida where I worked as a Fishery Biologist for the Service. While there, I had the opportunity to complete my Ph.D. at the University of Georgia through the Service’s SCEP Program. Thus far, my career focus has been on water quantity and quality in the Southeast and sharing my knowledge with others through outreach and education. I have been fortunate in my career to have several mentors including Dr. Catherine Pringle and Mollie Michala Lyman, and many role models and sources of inspiration; especially Dr. Ruth Patrick, Dr. Sylvia Earle, and Anne Doubilet. As an aquatic ecologist, I have had the opportunity to learn about the amazing aquatic organisms and their sometimes seemingly bizarre survival strategies, which has further increased my respect for underwater life. Understanding our dependence on freshwater has also enhanced my passion for protecting our freshwater resources. Exploring and protecting an aquatic world that is heavily influenced by human interactions (both directly and indirectly) is both exciting and challenging. I have a funny feeling that my career will continue to lead me to water! |
