説明South Rhine Presbyterian church was built in 1864 when the area was settled by farmers. A new church next door to the orginal church was erected in 1882. It is now privately owned but in quite good condition. The stained glass windows are superb. The Miller family donated the land for the church; The John Murray family of Rhine Park estate, 20,000 acres, developed Murray Merinos and was one of the very wealthy families of South Australia. The church became a Uniting Church in the 1970s and only closed a few years ago. South Rhine district – near the South Rhine now the Marne. Just beyond the settlement of South Rhine the North Rhine (Somme) joins the South Rhine River (Marne) to gouge a gorge through the eastern ranges on its way to join the Murray River after passing through Cambrai which was known as Rhine Villa until German place names were changed in 1917. (Cambrai was yet another battlefield of World War One used for a SA place name.) The main road through South Rhine is now Jutland Road after the famous Naval Battle of World War One which included Australian sailors. It is here in the caves and overhangs of the Marne River that WEA tutor Robin Coles has been leading tours to the Peramangk Rock Art sites. These sites and the Peramangk people themselves were especially studied by the son of a local Lutheran Pastor, Paul Hossfeld in the 1920s. The Peramangk were based especially around Mt Barker and in the Eden Valley to the Angaston areas. Their language has been lost but a few words continue in local place names. George Fife Angas was one who chose a Peramangk word for his property which covered Lindsay Park, Collingrove and Dutton Vale. The whole property was called Tarrawarra. In Peramangk language “tarra” means land that rises such as a hill and “warra” means a person’s land or area. Another well-known Peramangk word is “tainkila,” the name of a moth-grub which the town of Tungkillo is named after. The Presbyterian Church, a few kilometres out of Springton was constructed in 1864. This original building was replaced by a new Presbyterian Church in 1882. It was here the family of John Murray of Rhine Park worshipped. The building still stands as a private residence with the old primary school adjacent. The South Rhine Presbyterian cemetery is a few kms away from the church and school on land donated by James Shearer and it overlooks the South Rhine River now the Marne. Also near the River is the property of John Murray, brother of Alexander Borthwick Murray. John Murray owned 20,000 acres in the Springton-Eden Valley district and both the South and North Rhine flowed through his lands. Part of the world famous Murray Merino stud was conducted on Rhine Park as well as Murray’s properties at Mt Remarkable (Murray Town) and Mt Beevor. The district Council of South Rhine was an early council area and later became the Council of Jutland in 1917.
