| 説明 | Painted for the Dominican monastery at Thetford, the Thornham Parva Retable is the largest surviving altar-piece from the English Middle Ages. After the dissolution of the monasteries, it survived the iconoclasts of the 16th century, probably by having been kept in a private chapel of a Catholic family in Stradbroke. It was taken to Thornham Hall in 1787 and stored in a stable loft until it was rediscovered and given to St Mary's Church by the then Lord Henniker. It was restored over a period of 8 years and returned to the church in 2003. (from the church guide)The left panel shown here depicts Saints John the Baptist, Catherine and Dominic. The center panel: www.flickr.com/photos/hunky_punk/16394736012.The right panel: www.flickr.com/photos/hunky_punk/15773209284.The full work, behind the altar, can be seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/hunky_punk/15776111394. |
