| 説明 | Writing a historical novel like "Unregrettable" calls for a great deal more research than a novel set in the here and now. My protagonist is a young woman in the Weimar Republic, so I am lucky to have the opportunity to read the works of Irmgard Keun (the voice of the Weimar "Neu Frau") that have been translated into English. This helps gain a first person understanding of what it was like to be a young woman in that time and place. (Books translated by different translators helps identify what Irmgard's voice from that of her translators.)My main character, Margarethe, will be emigrating to Canada later on, so it seemed appropriate for her to be reading up on Canada. The Francis Parkman books came highly recommended (thanks @simsa0, and I am finding them to be just the thing, since Parkman's style isn't confined to the dry restoration of historical facts, but is written in a more narrative style. This makes his books much more accessible to the casual reader. I was able to find all of his Canadian History books in eBook form at Project Gutenberg, but for this one, which I found at Montreal Books through alibris . (Eventually I hope to find enough time to scan it and turn it into an eBook for Project Gutenberg Canada.) |
