ShookRemark: The Potlatch Lumber Company constructed this church building for the community of Potlatch, Idaho. The construction cost was $25,000; the structure was dedicated on December 2, 1912.The Union Church represented 22 different Protestant denominations and was often used as a community center by the local population. A. W. Laird, the assistant general manager of the Potlatch Lumber Company, stated during the dedication ceremony that the church was to be given for religious uses by the company to the Union Church of Potlatch, free of any cost, or any obligation, as long as the organization might wish to use it.At the time of its construction, the Union Church had the largest auditorium in North Idaho, seating 700. Total seating in the structure was 1,000. The structure contained numerous Sunday school rooms, as well as a full basement with kitchen, dining room, and parlors. In 1912, total church membership was 400, with Sunday school enrollment numbering more than 600.The Union Church was destroyed by fire in 1951.Copyright 2014. Some rights reserved.
