| 説明 | A fresh coat of paint has been applied to the exterior of the large vacant building at the corner of 9th Street and Rhode Island Ave. NW, taking with it a number of murals that have served as a landmark, of sorts, since about 2002. Prince of Petworth fretted the other day that the disappearance of these murals might be a tragedy, but that is certainly not the case. About half of them were originally painted by Shaw resident Ray Milefsky, in an attempt to drive away prostitutes and drug dealers who had once frequented the vacant, dilapidated structure. At one point, the letters read "Bienvenue a Shaw, Slum Historique" (Welcome to Shaw, Historic Slum), though the "Slum Historique" part was removed in 2007 (follow that link for images of what the building looked like before). Another mural included the phrase "Cafe Putain qui pue" (Stinky Whore Cafe). These murals were by no means a celebration of the neighborhood's history, though a pair on the adjacent wall, one of Robert Gould Shaw and Duke Ellington, and another depicting Carter G. Woodson, were added later by volunteers organized by ANC 2C commissioner Alex Padro. Back in 2007, Padro told DCist he thought it was high time for entire building to be painted over. And now it finally is.Notes: from DCist.com / Jan 21, 2010 |
