説明 | Alaska is known as the Land of the Midnight Sun and this natural phenomenon results in some fabulous sunsets in the park. The midnight sun occurs both north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle during the summer, and means that there are 24 consecutive hours of sunlight. During several weeks in mid-summer in Denali, the sun doesn’t go far enough below the horizon for nights to get dark. The longer hours of daylight provide a unique growing opportunity for plants. In parts of Alaska, gigantic vegetables—such as a 98-pound cabbage and 350-pound pumpkin—are the result of this extended daylight. Studies have shown that white spruce trees in Interior Alaska grow at about the same pace as the same trees in other states, despite the shorter summer. In Denali that translates into a season short in days but long in hours, where trees and plants do what plants at lower latitudes do, but in half the number of days. |
