| 説明 | Daniel Garlick designed these amazing shops for Rundle Street trader Samuel George Smith. They were built in the Federation or Queen Anne style with red brick walls and elaborate mouldings and decorations in a classical style. Note the shell at the top of the pediment and the niches in the walls, the tiny balcony for the central window etc. The building shocked conservative Adelaide residents in 1886. Perhaps they objected to the ladies busts in mouldings at the top of the Corinthian pilasters. It was the first major building in this style. In 1902 a similar type of building was erected in Hidley Street which is still there. It is known as Wests Coffee Palace although it was originally bulit as the Austral Stores. |
