説明Dynamiting Wall of Old University Building After Fire, Moscow, Idaho.Date: 1907Source Type: PostcardPrinter, Publisher, Photographer: R. R. Sherfey, C. E. Wheelock and CompanyPostmark: NoneCollection: Steven R. ShookRemark: The original campus of the University of Idaho consisted of forty acres, which was previously a wheat field owned by James Deakin. On this forty acres was a hill on which the Administration Building shown here was built in 1892. At 2:30 am on March 30, 1906, it was discovered that the Administration Building was on fire. Dean of Faculty, Jay Glover Eldridge, was one of the first university officials on the scene.Eldridge placed a ladder against the burning building in order to enter his second story office window; his purpose was to save university records. Eldridge tossed desk drawers containing university records out the window to Judge Roland Hodgins, a local drug store proprietor and jurist. An attempt to contain the fire to the east wing of the building (the far right in the image above) was made by West Side Hose Company No. 4 and Neptune Hose Company No. 3. Efforts were futile. The intensity of the fire increased, and there was fear that the steeple was going to collapse and that the chemistry laboratory would explode. Instead, the steeple collapsed slowly and straight down into the interior of the structure. By sunrise, the Administration Building was in ruins. Destroyed were many records, classroom items, a world famous botanical collection, and the contents of the university library.Later in 1906, the walls of the Administration Building were demolished using dynamite. The front steps into the main entrance, however, were recovered, removed, and built into a hillside located southeast of the Administration Building that was later built to replace the destroyed structure. These steps still exist [2014].SourceGibbs, Rafe. 1962. Beacon for Mountain and Plain: Story of the University of Idaho. Caldwell, Idaho: The Caxton Printers. 420 p.Copyright 2014.
