| 説明 | By Arthur Hughes (1832-1915), oil on canvasHughes’ painting is an unusual and poignant depiction of this subject. He shows Mary as a very young girl, kneeling in the straw with loosened, dishevelled hair as she reverently wraps the child Jesus in swaddling bands. The young mother and child seem fragile yet protected, as two angels shelter them with curving wings and three more angels hover in the rafters. The claustrophobic composition and Hughes’ distinctive colour sense produce an impression of intense, supernatural experience. The critic John Ruskin saw in this painting the qualities for which Hughes is best remembered: brilliant, magical colour, poetic imagination, and touching sentiment.
