| 説明 | Private Frank Hughes was 27 when he enlisted at for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF). Born in Gore in 1888, Frank worked as a builder's labourer in Wellington before departing for Europe with the 10th Reinforcements. On 25 August 1916, Hughes was executed after being found guilty of desertion. He was the first New Zealand soldier executed during the First World War for crimes against military laws.Hughes' heavy drinking caused him trouble from the start. He was brought in front of his commanding officer in July 1916 three times for ill-discipline. Hughes' last act of defiance was desertion. He was charged with deserting His Majesty's Service while on active service on the 29 July 1916. He was not found until 9 August 1916. Appearing before the Court Martial, he pleaded not guilty, blaming his behaviour on alcohol, ‘owing to the effect of drink I was light-headed and wandered out of the trench. I knocked round town until I was arrested. I intended to give myself up as soon as the Police came to me. While in town I was drinking.’ The execution was carried out in an orchard in the village of Hallencourt, France. In 2000, then Prime Minister Helen Clark and Minister of Defence Mark Burton, announced that the presentation of war medals, certificates and medallions to the families of the five soldiers who were executed during the First World War.
