| 説明 | Skiddaw and the high lakeland fells are just visible from this sheltered bay beyond Grune Point. In days of old these inter-border marshlands were popular with the smuggling trades as evidenced by Sir Walter Scott's 1824 novel: Redguantlet. His protagonist Alan Fairford's narrative describes his arrival here on the smuggling brig: Jumping Jenny .. "If he could not delight....or amuse himself by noticing the beauty of the sea-views around him, where the distant Skiddaw raised his brow, as if in defiance of the clouded eminence of Criffel, which lorded it over the Scottish side of the estuary, he had spirits and composure enough to pay particular attention to the master of the vessel, on whose character and own safety in all probability was dependent".From Redgauntlet by Sir Walter Scott 1771-1832. |
