説明The statue atop the Monument is in the likeness of Josias R. King, the first Minnesotan to volunteer for service in the American Civil War of 1861-1865, joining the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Regiment to "suppress the Rebellion". The First Minnesota mustered for a three-year term (1861-1864) in the Union Army when the prevailing enlistment period was three months. During subsequent battles, the Regiment sustained high degrees of casualties (killed, wounded or missing) at First Bull Run, VA (20%) and Antietam, MD (28%), and a catastrophic degree of casualties (82%) at Gettysburg, PA, on the late afternoon of Thursday July 2, 1863.At a pivotal moment and position during the massive Confederate attack along the Emmitsburg Pike toward Cemetery Ridge on July 2nd, Union General Winfield Scott Hancock, Commander of the II Corps, ordered the First Minnesota to charge into a situation where it would be out-manned by odds of at least 5:1.Hancock's purpose was to buy minutes of delay with human lives, and one survivor spoke afterward that he expected the advance to result in "death or wounds to [every single one of the attackers]." The Regiment fully and instantly executed the order, received at least 82% casualties among those making the attack, and contributed significantly to the preservation of a key Union defensive position on the heights of Cemetery Ridge. When given the opportunity to speak about the First Minnesota after the war, both General Hancock and President Calvin Coolidge were unrestrained with praise. Hancock placed the Regiment's heroism highest in the known annals of war, and ascribed unsurpassed gallantry to the famed counter-attack. President Coolidge stated that "those eight companies of the First Minnesota are entitled to rank as the saviors of their country".The Monument is sited so that the Union soldier atop it is perpetually facing Gettysburg.
