| 説明 | Remembering the first week of the invasion of the Crimea by Russian forces in March, when the protest outside Parliament in London metamorphosed from paralleling the demonstrations in Kiev's Independence Square - calling for greater European integration - to one against the violation of Ukrainian territorial integrity by Russia. The seizure of the Crimea was not unexpected, nor was the assault against Ukraine's sovereignty without precedent, but with the unravelling of order in the east - the insurgency in the Donbass and the accompanying mushrooming of belligerent micronations - the arc of events has moved away from an easily-prognosticated narrative of inextinguishable and stagnant civil war to one without a clear terminus. The shooting-down of MH17 could not have been anticipated, and has thrown the conflict, stagnating already in the international news into a unceasing background conflict in the style of Syria or Palestine (though without the benefit of an easy-shot pin-up poster child to look down at us from the trains and buses, inviolate in print only, and accompanied by a donation-ready telephone number), into the international sphere, and rendered the future unreadable. |
