| 説明 | William A. Petersen memorial in section B at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Washington, D.C., in the United States in 2014.Prospect Hill Cemetery was added to the Register of Historic Places of the District of Columbia (a listing of historic sites maintained by the city) in 2005.Peterson was a German immigrant who founded a well-known tailor's shop in the District of Columbia. In 1849, Petersen constructed a plain, red brick, three-story townhouse at 516 10th Street NW, across the street from Ford's Theatre. Abraham Lincoln was brought here after he was shot, and died in the first floor bedroom at the rear of the house. Petersen fell on hard financial times, and committed suicide on June 17, 1871.Left destitute, the Petersen family sold the home. Recognizing its historic value, attorney Louis F. Schade (also buried at Prospect Hill) purchased the Petersen House on November 25, 1878, for $4,500 ($109,971 in 2014 dollars). The front parlor on the first floor (where Mrs. Lincoln kept her vigil for the dying president) was used as the main office of the ''Washington Sentinel'' newspaper. Schade leased the house to the Memorial Association of the District of Columbia in 1893. The National Park Service purchased the Petersen House from Schade for $30,000 ($850,440 in 2014 dollars) in 1896. |
