| 説明 | Note: The home and family curio shop business for over 100 years, Verkamp's re-opened as a National Park Service visitor center on November 26, 2008. The National Park Service now owns the building and it hosts a bookstore and exhibits about the pioneer history of Grand Canyon Village. www.flickr.com/photos/grand_canyon_nps/sets/7215762639621...Sustainability From The BeginningVerkamp's, completed in 1906, was built by John Verkamp as his home and his business. Water has always been a precious commodity on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and is a resource to be used sparingly. The Verkamp store and home was designed to address this environmental limitation.Designed for the environment, the terrace and porch roofs sloped to drain into a cistern beneath the east end of the porch. The family used the hand pump on the porch to draw water from the cistern for household use. Water conservation, a critical necessity in the early 20th century, is still part of the Verkamp environmental ethic as we move forward into the 21st century.The Verkamp family business, touching five generations over 100 years, continues to place the quality of service and environmental protection and conservation as its top business commitments. |
