The placement of rocks on headstones is Jewish funeral practice, but has spread to a wide range of religious communities of many faiths as well as non-religious individuals.The placement of decorative, playful, or other items on graves was an African American funerary practice. Because poor African Americans could not afford luxurious funeral monuments, inexpensive decorative items were often placed on graves instead. This practice is no longer confined to the African American community, and is especially practiced by families decorating a child's grave. |
