説明 | Native, warm-season, perennial, tufted grass to 120 cm tall. Stem nodes have a prominent ring of hairs. Flowerheads are digitate with 2-4 erect branches (4-7 cm long) pressed together. Spikelets occur right to the base of the branches and are hairy and paired; lower spikelet is unstalked, 3-4.5 mm long and awned, upper spikelet stalked and unawned. Flowers from late spring to autumn. Found in unshaded areas of native pastures, but rarely a dominant species. Occurs on a wide range of soil types, but prefers heavier soils with good moisture holding capacity. Native biodiversity. Has moderate drought and frost tolerance, but is shade intolerant. Very palatable and of good feed quality when green. The slender stems are more digestible than coarser grasses such as Red Grass, but quality falls rapidly after maturity and is very low in winter. Preferred by cattle more so than sheep. Livestock can sometimes pull the plant out by its roots. Plants live about 3-4 years and are tolerant of light to moderate grazing, but not heavy set stocking. Low levels of had seed and high recruitment in spring. Best suited to rotational grazing. |
