| 説明 | Duke Ellington Bridge over Rock Creek Park, Adams Morgan---1934-35, Paul Cret---As a requirement of its streetcar charter, the Rock Creek Railway built a 125' high steel trestle bridge on this site in 1891---1911, the steel trestle bridge became shaky and had to be reinforced and narrowed---In 1934, construction of the replacement bridge shown above was begun---Since traffic moving across the bridge was too important to interrupt, the old bridge was moved 80' downstream to be used as a detour until the new one was completed. To do this, the bridges footings were put on rollers on top of parallel rails. The bridge was then moved by machinery powered by horses. Auto traffic resumed that same day, streetcar traffic was interrupted less than 48 hours.---The Calvert Street Bridge (as it was called for many years) was constructed of concrete faced with Indiana limestone. It was renamed for Washington native Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington in the 1970's. ---The abutments are embellished by Leon Hermant's relief panels representing four modes of travel: ship, train, automobile, and airplane. ---Until the 1980's when this bridge underwent extensive renovation it had the reputation as the favorite bridge for people seeking to commit suicide. The 1980 renovation included installation of the security fence and railings to discourage this. |
