My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks.Out of a desire for simplicity, the rectangular choir of the Cistercian church was low and shallow. Two chapels flanked the flat chevet.The monk's choir (stalls) and transept of the Notre Dame church are in the Romanesque style. The beautifully decorated capitals atop the pillars are also in the same style. The sculpture, sonar and pure, is evident in the capitals in the form of bas-relief stylized leaves, in the spirit of the original Cistercian churches.In contrast, the choir and the vaults are clearly Gothic. The thick vaults, the narrow leaded windows and the interior decoration are very sober and contributed to the atmosphere of plainness and contemplation.The choir was enlarged and equipped with an ambulatory in 1622, after the authorities refused to move Wenceslas' mausoleum, which disturbed the church services.----------------------------------------------------------In 1793, during the French Revolution, the abbey was completely burnt down by French forces, in retaliation for the hospitality it had provided to Austrian troops, and the community dispersed. |
