Wednesday afternoon, 12 April 2006www.franklinsbrewery.comHyattsville Arts District ProjectElvert Xavier Barnes Photography___________Having throughly enjoyed my gazpacho soup when the busboy would place the entree onto the table, observing the display and portions, I had little doubt regarding my Southwestern Salad. The mixed greens as well as the tomatoe wedges were fresh. Though the cucumbers may have been sliced sometime in advance they were not bad. Just a bit more firm and dry than what they may would have been had they just been sliced. I usually do not like guacamole, but, in this case I did. It, too, was fresh and did not taste as if it had been sitting around. The grilled chicken breast strips were moist and somewhat sweet. As the combination of the different flavors and textures of Southwestern Salad bursted in my mouth.Though the plate was full I managed to eat it all. Chaised with blackberry ice tea. So, when the waitress inquired if I wanted dessert had I not been traveling by mass transit I may would have said yes. But my stomach was so full and I did not want to be in the midst of travelling on the bus or subway and having to go to the bathroom. It is an experience that I've had several times before. And one that is not too easy to forget. The total was $19.50. I left a $5 tip. I had contemplated asking if they had a dessert cart and, if so, may I photograph it. But, as a black male, this may would have aroused even more suspicion. So, thanking the waitress and hostess for an excellent lunch, I'd return to Baltimore Boulevard for more afternoon street photography. The only problem that I have with Franklin's is its location. I live WDC and do not have nor do I want an automobile. Getting to Franklin's is not an easy task. Though not too far from the West Hyattsville Station having to transfer from the subway to bus would be a discouraging factor not only for me but for many of those who I know. That is not to say that these friends or I would not trek out the Franklin's because it is the kind of place that a group of friends would travel out to for a special occasion. While I'm not one to drink alcohol most of my friends do and their concern maywould be whether they would be stopped by the police after having a few drinks at Franklin's. And, if Franklin's was more accessable, they could leave their cars at home and take the subway, as they do for many of the places that they visit. With that having been said, Franklin's is a place worth visiting. And I certainly will revisit it again. Perhaps with a group of friends. Or when I take another photo day trip to the Hyattsville - College Park area. And then, too, it is a place that folks in the surrounding neighborhoods certainly will gravitate toward. On a scale of 0 to 10, I give Franklin's a 10. And that is without having yet visited the General Store. It reminds me of some of the progressive establishments in the Clarendon and Ballston areas of Northern Virginia. With the soon development of the Hyattsville Arts District there is no doubt in my mind that Franklin's will be at its center ... bursting with flavors and textures.Elvert Xavier Barnes PhotographyOut And About 2006Franklin's .
