This Waterfall is noted for the immense mass of overhanging rock, from which the water is precipitated into the valley beneath. It is about 800 feet high. No living soul has ever been able to descend into the valley as yet. Snakes of a very large description are said to be the sole occupants of this solitary place."Crushers was the early locality name for Katoomba from the 1870s. The name Katoomba had been established by the 1880s but the waterfall appears to have retained the earlier name for some time.Now named Katoomba Falls, the upper falls shown here has been retouched to flow vertically, it actually flows to the right of the photo at the Middle Platform shown at the bottom of the photo. It then falls a similar distance to the base. The actual height of the falls is 55 metres top to bottom.The valley below had been surveyed in the 1820s and John Britty North's coal and shale mines were opened around the base of the falls from 1870. Diamond pythons are still moderately common in the rainforest gullies in the lower mountains.Format: Albumen photoprint, showing retouch. Label transposed from back of mount.
