説明The extract, below, from the September 1899 Allesley Parish Magazine is to be found, framed, in the Belfry.Inscribed on the back “For the Belfry of All Saints Church Allesley from the Rev. A W Darwin MA, September 28. 1899”Arthur William Darwin. University College, Durham B.A. 1890, M.A 1896. Lincoln Theological College 1892. Deacon, Ripon, 1893, Priest, Richmond for Ripon, 1894. Curate of Richmond 1893-95, Curate of Allesley 1895-99. Rector of Ampton 1899-1902, Rector of Stonham Aspel (Norwich diocese) from 1902"The following list of days and seasons in which the bells of Allesley Church are rung, have been kindly supplied to us by Mr Albert Harris, Parish Clerk and Sexton. The Morning Bell is rung on the 4th bell, at 5 o’clock from Lady Day to Michaelmas Day and at 6 o’clock from Michaelmas Day to Lady Day, Sundays excepted. Also it is not rung from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day.The Curfew Bell is rung on the 4th bell at 8 o’clock in the evening throughout the year, except on Sundays and from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day.The Pancake Bell is rung on the 3rd bell at 11 o’clock in the morning of Shrove Tuesday.Sunday Bells. The 1st and 2nd bells are chimed at 8 o’clock in the morning. At 10 o’clock the Sermon Bell is rung on the 5th bell.At half past 10 this bell is dropped for the purpose of chiming. At twenty minutes to 11, chiming for service commences, three chimes being sounded for a quarter of an hour and then the 1st bell is rung for five minutes. In the afternoon or evening, two chimes are sounded for a quarter of an hour before the Service and then the 5th bell is rung up when there is a Sermon; when there is no Sermon it is simply chimed.Special Festivals. The bells are rung on Easter Day, Whitsun Day, Trinity Sunday and on the Sunday of the Harvest Thanksgiving and also on the Queen’s Birthday. On the 5th of November (Gunpowder Treason Day) the practice for Christmas is commenced, the bells then being “fired”. The bells are also rung for an hour on Christmas Eve, commencing at half past 11 to half past 12 and on New Year’s Eve they commence to ring at a quarter to 12, being rung 10 minutes, then the tenor (5th) bell is tolled for five minutes and after 12 o’clock they are rung for three quarters of an hour. The Passing Bell is tolled as soon as the death is notified. For a male, the tolling is commenced on the 5th bell by striking it three times, then each bell from the 1st to the 4th is struck the same number of times. Then the 5th bell is struck fifteen times and the others from the 1st to the 4th are also struck fifteen times and then the 5th bell is rung up and down. For a female, the 5th bell is struck twice, then each bell from the 1st to the 4th is also struck the same number of times. Then the 5th bell is struck eleven times and the others from the 1st to the 4th are also struck eleven times and then the 5th bell is rung up and down. The Funeral Bell. The 5th bell is tolled for half an hour before the funeral and for ten minutes after the Service is concluded.Week Day Services. Before the Service the 1st and 2nd bells are chimed for ten minutes, then the 1st bell is chimed for five minutes. It is to be hoped that if these bells are to discharge the useful task which they have performed for so many centuries, that efforts will shortly be made to re-hang them, as both frame and bearings are very much worn and likely to become a source of danger to the tower itself."
