| 説明 | WWII (Nazi) German tank final design put into production before the war ended. Sloped armor wide tracks and other features to allow it to go head to head with Soviet T-34, KV-1, anti-tank artillery, etc. Another too-little-too-late deal, mostly well designed and manufactured but deployed almost exclusively in defensive battles that could delay but not reverse defeat. And with detail defects that made them short-lived and prone to both breakdowns (final drive gearing) and fires (fuel hose and fittings). By the end of the war German manufacturing was in disarray, and 2 of 3 abandoned Panthers tested by the US Army in the Normandy area suffered catastrophic shattering of their front armor, when subjected to plausible anti-tank fire.On a 1:1 basis a US M4/75 stood little chance against a Panther, because the 75mm gun could not penetrate the front armor or mantlet of the Panther, while the Panther's high velocity 7.5cm gun could penetrate the M4's frontal armor at long range. However, the US massively out-produced the Germans, as did the Soviets, so 1:1 was seldom reality. Virtually all Allied tank or anti-tank guns could penetrate the side of a Panther's hull or turret. Panthers had to be driven carefully and their final drive design had an actual average life of 500km, 750km in the best case. So they needed to be shipped by train to as close to a battle as possible. The other than its running gear, Panther was well suited to open space and long distance fighting, but was too wide and the gun was too long to be handy in the close quarters of the bocage or in urban areas. Turret traverse rate was a function of engine RPM, unlike the M4 Sherman, which traversed 360 degrees in 15 seconds at any engine speed. A Panther at 1000rpm took 45 seconds for 360 degrees; at 3000rpm (Maximum) it equaled the Sherman's 15 seconds. In fall of 1944's final battles on the Western front, newly formed Panther divisions succumbed mostly to ambushes by M4s with 75mm guns.On the eastern front, Soviet forces would paint their markings on any captured German equipment, but didn't do repair work on Panthers or Tigers, being too complex and parts hard to find. PKW-IVs, Stug III, etc, were maintained because they were easy to work on and parts were plentiful. |
