説明 | Located at 604 H Street NW, in today’s Chinatown, known today as the Wok and Roll Restaurant was once the boarding house of Mary Surratt, the first woman executed in the United States. Mary Surratt moved into this house from southern Maryland following the death of her husband and took in boarders to help support herself. She was a Roman Catholic and supporter of the Confederacy. Her son, John, served the Confederacy as a spy and dispatch carrier. He was recruited by John Wilkes Booth to take part in a conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln and other high-ranking federal officials. Booth visited the house on numerous occasions to see John and others associated with the conspiracy who also stayed there. It is believed that no “formal” meetings of the conspirators took place at the house, and only their visits tied the house to the plot. Three days after Booth assassinated Lincoln at the nearby Ford’s Theater, Mary Surratt was arrested as the result of an unlucky set of circumstances. Just as federal officials were leaving after questioning her, Lewis Powell/Payne (assigned to kill Secretary of State Seward) came to the door. Seeing Powell at the door was taken as sufficient evidence to implicate Mary Surratt. She was taken into custody, given a military trial and hanged alongside three of the conspirators on July 7, 1865 on the grounds of what is now Fort McNair in SW Washington. Her guilt in the conspiracy remains a subject of debate today. |
