説明This memorial stone is built into the wall of the old Keep in Castle Street, Newmilns in Ayrshire. It commemorates John Law who was killed when a party of Newmilns residents stormed the Keep and successfully brought about the escape of eight imprisoned Covenanters (see if you can find the spelling mistake on the memorial stone)! No mention of it here but I have read elsewhere that two of the Kings Dragoon's also died during the break-out. I grew-up in and among these small "valley" towns lying east of Kilmarnock and while almost every area of Scotland objected to King Charles II attempt to unify the Scottish Kirk into the practice and governance of the Church of England, Scotland's most southern counties, Ayrshire and Galloway seem to have been in the very heat of resistance. After the Scottish Covenant was signed in Edinburgh in 1638. The 1st. Earl of Loudoun who owned most of Newmilns and the valley towns was a leading opponent of the introduction of Bishops, he became a major figure in the military struggles of the Wars of the Bishops and in the aftermath negotiations with the King. Opposing your Monarch is always a policy entailing some risk the more so when your Earldom was the gift of that King only a few years earlier. In due course Loudoun paid a price but managed to keep his life, after spending time in the Tower of London and being fined for his support of the Covenanters. cause. Other local Covenanters of note who paid the ultimate price for their religion were:David Findlay, shot at Newmilns in 1666.James Wood, executed at Magusmuir 25th. November 1679.John Nisbet, executed in Kilmarnock 14th. April 1683.James Nisbet, executed at Glasgow 11th. June 1684.This long period of religious strife spanned the reigns of King Charles I & II. I find it very difficult to comprehend what life must have been like, by today's standards it was brutally hard and mostly short. How did they cope with all this tragedy?
