Paul Koester, 517th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron jumpmaster, signals to Senior Airman Caleb Williams, 517th EAS loadmaster, to verify the C-17 Globemaster III has reached an altitude of 9,500 feet as he prepares to exit the aircraft for a freefall parachute deployment Nov. 17 during the multilateral Royal New Zealand Air Force-sponsored tactical airlift exercise, Kiwi Flag, at RNZAF Base Ohakea, New Zealand. Koester wears an altimeter on his left hand. The C-17 is out of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Koester is the pararescue functional manager for the Battlefield Airmen Branch at home station, Pacific Air Forces Headquarters at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. He hails from Colorado Springs, Colo. Williams is deployed from the 535th Airlift Squadron at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. Kiwi Flag personnel are supporting Exercise Southern Katipo -- held in New Zealand’s South Island -- by managing air operations and providing cargo and passenger airlift including tactical air drops to SK participants.
