| 説明 | Sign along Bear Meadows Road, Huntingdon County, at the western boundary of the Detweiler Run Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest.The natural area protects a large tract of old-growth forest (hemlocks, pitch pines, white pines, and mixed hardwoods) in a deep, talus-filled stream valley. The Mid State Trail traverses the core of the natural area; Detweiler Road (also called Detweiler Run Road or Detweiler Trail) traverses the buffer of younger-growth forest to the north.The site avoided being logged off more than a century ago probably because it lacked a tramway to easily access the timber. Active logging occurred around (but not within) the site; lumber companies used separate tramways—one east of the site, the other to the west—but never connected the tramways before the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania purchased the land. |
