| 説明 | The "Gate" of San Francisco, CA's Chinatown, seen from across Bush Street at Grant Avenue. Taken by a Nikon D40x at ISO 400 with a Sigma 17-70mm ƒ 2.8-4 OS HSM macro lens (at 24)The red brick rings seen in many intersections of San Francisco, including this one, are NOT evidence of old Cable Car turntables - they are cisterns for firefighting water, installed after the 1906 'Quake and Fire - The City's water supply from Crystal Springs on the Peninsula was cut, and many of the mains in The City broke in the 'Quake, leaving the Fire Department without water... The City Fathers decided "never again" would the FD be so crippled: hence the cisterns - and there are two pumping stations able to flood the fire hydrant system (especially the High Pressure mains - the hydrants with the blue tops, as seen on the lower right of this shot) with salt water from the Bay. AFAIK, the pumping stations have been activated "for real" only once - during the 1989 Loma Prieta aftermath: they didn't do much good, as the area on fire (the Marina) was outside their (then, now rectified) area of protection...The Fire Hydrant system is entirely separate from the drinking water system, BTW, except where the drinking water system supplies the Hydrant system - and there are backflow prevention valves in place at those locations. (drinking water only flows into the hydrants, nothing goes back into the drinking water system)Also seen, on the left, are a "Police Telephone"/Fire Call box. San Francisco is almost unique, now, in keeping street call boxes for the Fire Department - many of the immigrants in Chinatown can't speak English, but do know how to pull a fire alarm... The Police Telephone is a relic, still maintained, of the days before easily portable radios. They are now used mostly for items that the calling officer doesn't want to put "on the air". |
