説明Redbanks.Redbanks developed as a small town because it was near the ford across the Light River on the main track from Gawler to Mallala and places further north. The settlers chose sites away from the flood prone river edges as they took up land from 1858. A bridge across the Light River was proposed in 1866 but it was 1874 before it was erected. The Redbanks Hotel, called the Seven Stars operated by Charles Tilley appears to have been licensed from around 1867 when the township with a blacksmith, store and Post Office were established. The Seven Stars closed in 1903. Settlement in the district increased at that time as the government was planning a railway from Gawler via nearby Wasleys to the great copper mine at Burra. Also in 1867 the Wesleyan Methodists from Gawler laid a foundation stone on a Wesleyan church. It was located south of the present township. A provisional school opened in the church in 1880 and with some closures operated until 1937. The building and land however, were deemed to the Minister of Education in 1880 away from the Wesleyan church. The church closed around 1900, at the time of Methodist churches amalgamation. Redbanks was probably too close to Woolsheds and Mallala for the church to attract many Methodists of any persuasion after 1900. In 1932 another movement arose to erect a Methodist church in Redbanks and this was achieved in 1934 when the Redbanks Methodist Church was opened by Mr Worden of Wasleys. It closed in 1964. Near the town the banks of the Light River are red in colour and the clay provided the raw materials for a brick making kiln which operated from the 1870s to 1911. At that time it was taken over by a new operator Mr Hanold and following him My Pym until the kiln and brick works closed in the 1930s. It was re-opened in the 1950s and operated again through to the 1970s.The land here was originally part of the pastoral lease of the Butler family of Mallala Station. In 1909 a small reservoir was created along the Light River with water pumped from the Barossa Reservoir. It was upgraded in 1985. The mansion just outside of Redbanks called Verner was built by the Verner family, a well to do Irish family who moved to SA in 1857. They are buried in the Two Wells cemetery.
