Published by Routledge in October of 2003.excerpted from www.washingtonhistory.com/Projects/index.htm__________________When last week, in observance of Black History Month, that I embark on my first photowalk through the Shaw - LeDroit Park Neighborhood of NW WDC I would reflect on when as a nappy headed black boy at George Washington Carver Elementary School in Southern Maryland, perhaps during what was then referred to as Negro History Month, but throughout the year as well, that Negro teachers would discuss and lecture on the rich cultural heritage and contributions that Negroes had made to the American society. Including that which was made by Negro-American architects many who played a most important part in the history, architecture and cityscape of Washington DC. And, in particular, the immediate area surrounding Howard University. It is for this reason that in observance of Black History Month 2006 that I would finally began a project that had been fermenting in my brain since when I was a nappy headed black boy at George Washington Carver School. And that would later be inspired by my first visit to the Shaw area,in the early 70's when attending the University of Maryland in College Park that I would meet a white guy at the Lost and Found and who, at that time, lived in the Shaw neighborhood. After spending the night at his place, and just before getting into VW to drive back to College Park, on the following Sunday morning, we would take a quick walk around his neighborhood at which he would shed some light on the rich architectural history.Remembering what I had been taught by Negro teachers at George Washington Carver School ... and wishing that I had had a camera which I did not I would vow then to rerutn, someday in the future, for an ongoing documentary project focusing on the architecture and cityscape of the Shaw-LeDroit area of WDC.That day would come on Friday afternoon, 10 February 2006 ...UNDER CONSTRUCTION . 20 February 2006Elvert Xavier Barnes Photography |
