Bates, aged 81 years father of Marlon Bates and Harvey A. Bates passed away Friday night at 9 o’clock at the Wilson County hospital, following a 6 week illness. Old age and its attendant diseases were responsible for his demise. Funeral services for Mr. Bates were held Monday afternoon at the Christian church with Rev. A. J. Baird, in charge. The following acted as pallbearers, his three sons, Marlon, Leonard and Harvey and J. E. Newby. Interment was in the Neodesha cemetery. C. H. Bates was born in Vinton county, Ohio, February 26, 1845. He grew to manhood in that county and when the Civil War broke out in 1861 he joined with the volunteers and served three years and three months in Company H, 18th Ohio. After he was discharged he came home and went to Noble county. There he married Miss Mary R. Bowersock and to this union eight children were born, four boys and four girls. All four girls preceded him in death. The sons are: M. A. Bates of Enid, Okla.; H. L. Bates of Hamilton, Ohio; H. A. Bates of Neodesha and E. G. Bates of Pasadena, Calif., and one nephew W. H. Kennedy of Enid. Mr. Bates was converted in his early married life and joined the M. E. church and remained a faithful member the rest of his life. His wife died 44 years ago. Then he with his children came to Wilson county, Kansas, living on a farm north of this city until failing health caused him to retire, going to Ohio where a son lived. There he bought property and lived until the 13th of January of this year, when he came to Kansas to visit Harvey Bates. He stayed one month, then went to Enid to see his son, Marlon, but because of failing health he decided to go back to Ohio. On June 25th he came here but he gradually grew weaker and was not able to go farther, so was placed in the hospital here where he passed away August 13th at 9 o’clock. He was a kind faithful father, a good dependable neighbor, an influential citizen and will be greatly missed by a host of relatives and friends. |
