説明Detail of the entrance of the Embassy of Slovenia in at 2410 California Street NW in Washington, D.C., in the United States. One more stop on the 2013 Kalorama House Tour! The government of Yugoslavia purchased the empty lot at 2410-2412 California Street NW in February 1958. The embassy structure was built in 1961 and replaced former embassy units at 1520 16th Street NW and 1600 Massachusetts Avenue NW. It housed five apartments for embassy officials in the basement. On January 29, 1967, a pipe bomb went off in front of the building, causing extensive damage. The 10-inch thick front wall had a 3-foot-wide hole blown in it at 3:45 A.M. It cracked several inner walls, knocked hundreds of ceiling tiles out of place, and shattered windows in the embassy and in homes up and down the street. Embassies were also bombed in Ottawa, New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, and Toronto. No one was ever charged with the crime, but Croatian nationalists were suspected. The embassy was bombed again on June 9, 1976. The bomb, which went off at 12:07 A.M., shattering most of the windows in the embassy and in neighboring homes. The bomb was tossed down an outside stairwell, where it blew an 18-inch hole in the concrete floor at the bottom of the stairwell and blew out a metal door. A terrorist organization seeking freedom for Greeks in Yugoslavia claimed responsibility. No one was charged with the crime.Another bomb was found but did not explode on August 22, 1982. The tube of dynamite was tossed into the driveway about 25 feet in front of the embassy at 7:25 P.M. It was removed and disarmed. No one was ever charged in the crime. When Yugoslavia dissolved in 1992, the embassy became the property of Slovenia. The structure was altered in 2006. Much larger windows were installed in front, and a new, wrap-around glass cube added to the west side and and northwest and southwest corners. This alteration was designed by the firm of Powe and Jones Architects. The Chancery occupies the first two floors, and the ambassadorial residence occupies the third floor. The renovations took a year.
