説明 | The Washington Hilton Hotel at 1919 Connecticut Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., in the United States. It was designed by architect William B. Tabler and developed by Uris Brothers for the Hilton Hotel chain. Built in 1965 of blazingly white pre-cast concrete sections, its Y-shaped design means that all rooms have a view of the outside. The hotel has two ballroom levels, including the largest ballroom in the city without columns. It has 1,117 rooms and suites. Until the construction of the Marriott Wardman Park's 1,316 rooms and suites in 1977, it was the largest hotel in the city. It still has the largest ballroom space. (The Washington Marriott Marquis -- with 1,175 rooms and suites -- will also surpass the Washington Hilton when it opens in 2014. Other big hotels in the city: The Grand Hyatt has 897 rooms and suites, the Hyatt Regency-Capitol Hill has 836 rooms and suites, the Omni Shoreham has 832 rooms and suites, the Renaissance Washington has 807 rooms and suites, the J.W. Marriott has 772 rooms and suites, and the Mayflower has 731 rooms and suites.)In 1972, ARPANET was first demonstrated in public here. ARPANET was a way for Defense Department scientists to communicate with one another via computer. It was the progenitor of today's Internet. On March 30, 1981, John Hinckley, Jr. tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan at the entrance to the lower-level ballroom (just behind the trees here). |
